So [personal profile] cypsiman2 has been watching PMMM lately, and that prompted me to jump on the bandwagon and finally watch those last two episodes of the show that I keep putting off watching.

I was putting them off because after getting spoiled for the ending and initially squeeing, the more I thought about it, the more I was sure that I was going to have issues with that ending. Now that I've seen it, yep, I sure do have issues with it, and issues with the series overall, but those are going to have to wait for a later post. For now, have some relatively shallow as-I-watch sort of commentary on episodes 11 and 12.

-Hahaha I love that bit when Kyubey compares his exploitation of Magical Girls to humans’ exploitation of the livestock we use for food, and then he’s like “Actually, I treat you guys way better than you treat your cows.” Sadly that is kind of true. Also enjoyed the shots of cows and pigs with the witch-text over them. Ah, the pig-witch! The most fearsome adversary of all!

-I’m not sure how I feel about the “Magical Girls throughout history” revelation. On the one hand, my nerdy self loves the continuity of it and the links to other famous real-life ladies. On the other hand, I don’t like the implication that those famous ladies like Joan of Arc and Cleopatra were only awesome and influential because Kyubey gave them magical powers, as opposed to being awesome and influential in their own right.

-Loved that bit where Kyubey explains that his race views emotions as a kind of mental illness. YOU ARE SO CREEPY, KYUBEY. ILU.

-I liked the scene between Madoka’s mom and her teacher. Nice to see this show continuing to pass the Bechdel Test.

-Obviously it’s hard for me to accurately judge Japanese voice acting, but from what I can tell, Homura and Madoka’s VAs were pretty phenomenal in these last two episodes. I can’t remember the last time I heard a voice actor sound so genuinely anguished that her voice actually cracked and strained like it does in real life when someone’s crying and trying to talk at the same time. Especially that scene where Homura is explaining her backstory to Madoka while hugging her — just heartbreaking voice work in that scene.

-Madoka’s last conversation with her mom was really touching and all, but I find it reeeeeeally hard to believe that any loving mother would let her teenage daughter go off alone in a situation like that, no matter how good an argument she made.

-I love how even in that moment when Madoka makes her wish and Kyubey realizes that all his plans are fucked, he’s still switching his tail cutely back and forth. Even when freaking out, Kyubey is still pretty unflappable.

-I love that bit when witch-Madoka appears over the Earth and Kyubey’s like “Woo hoo, now we get to watch Madoka get screwed as payback for embarrassing me” and then Godoka appears and is like “NOT SO FAST! I shall counterattack with a costume change!” And then since not even Madoka can be exempt from her own “get rid of all witches” rule, she like has to kill her own witch-self and my brain just exploded from TIME PARADOX

-I adore that shot of Godoka patting the head of an Anthony. SO CUTE. The Anthonies are my favorite witch-minions.

Especially the whole “floating naked in a sparkly meta void while having a heart-to-heart and snuggling in your boobies” thing.

Although I’m glad that they’re not canonically gay, because then I’d have to rake the show over the coals for giving their romance a sad ending.

-Madoka’s little brother is ADORABLE.

-Lolololol I love how at the end it’s revealed that future-Homura’s been telling this whole story to future-Kyubey and I’m like “HOMURA WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING DON’T TELL KYUBEY ABOUT THE WITCH SYSTEM YOU’LL GIVE HIM IDEAS” and sure enough Kyubey’s like “That witch system sure sounds like an easier method of gathering energy than what we have now! We Kyubeys probably would have just done that if it had been an option” and I’m like “I KNEW ITTTTT” and Homura’s like “Yeah, I know you would, because you guys weren’t very friendly with us in the previous timelines” and Kyubey just cutely cocks his head to the side and is like “I just don’t understand you humans” and I’m like “AAAAAAAAH”

Madoka may have rewritten the universe, but Kyubey is still his same old amoral cutely terrifying self.

-And the fight scenes in this show are, as always, stunning. Homura v. Walpurgis Night, Madoka v. Walpurgis Night, Madoka v. Madoka, and Homura v. future monsters all humped my eyeballs to a highly satisfying degree.

I love all your QB commentary here :D And the HomuMado stuff. And the Tatsuya, because yes, he is the adorablest.

I don’t like the implication that those famous ladies like Joan of Arc and Cleopatra were only awesome and influential because Kyubey gave them magical powers, as opposed to being awesome and influential in their own right.

I don't understand how people keep getting this implication. When do any of the magical girls in the series have time to be influential on a historical scale? Making a contract isn't a ticket to an easy life; it makes things harder and busier and more complicated! If anything, Joan and Cleopatra and so on being magical girls on top of being influential means they worked harder and had more awesomeness, not the other way around.

The manga is really explicit about this, by the way. Kyuubey points out that the most attractive targets for contracts are the people whose destinies were already set to be world-changing (and thus he can't understand why Madoka seems to be in their league, power-wise).

This isn't as explicitly canon-based, but the fan theory I find most sensible is that QB doesn't "give" anyone magic. He just unlocks it. Madoka's power level keeps going up because of things to do with her and Homura, not anything QB did. And there's no way the Incubators had the power to rewrite the mechanics of reality all along but were just sitting on it waiting for some mentally-ill adolescent aliens to give them direction.

Eh, it's only a point of conflict if you try to interpret Kyuubey's remarks as an accurate, well-informed report. And that, too, would be at odds with what we see in the rest of the series: that Kyuubey doesn't really understand humans at all. In particular, he consistently underestimates how far human ambition, potential, and emotion can actually get.

Okay, I see what you mean about the last bit. It's just that there are people who have taken the two as distinct, assumed PMMM featured the former, and then held that up as a reason the series is bad and wrong, so I didn't want to let it go unremarked.
