This week on the Magical Girl Project, I'm skimming my way through the English dub of Cyberteam in Akihabara, which is conveniently on Youtube for the moment. At first I was just skimming for research purposes, but my genuine interest was piqued by Episode 8, which provides us with something that every Magical Girl show must have at least one of:

The Lesbian Episode!

This one was so delightfully gay that I felt compelled to make a picspam of it. But first I should introduce the characters:

Hibari: Red-headed heroine and ordinary junior-high student. (Luci Christian)
Suzume: Blue-haired best friend and gadgeteer genius. (Tiffany Grant)
Tsugumi: Black-haired martial artist with orange headband. (Kira Vincent-Davies)

(I point out the voice actors because in spite of a frequently awkward script, the English dub has some good actors working on it.)

Anyway in this episode, Hibari finds a love letter in her locker which she thinks is from this "Prince" guy she has a crush on, but it turns out to be from a girl named Uzura (Cynthia Martinez). Uzura turns out to be your typical obsessively lovestruck schoolgirl lesbian and Hibari isn't sure how to turn her down. Hibari's friends suggest that she pretend to have a boyfriend, but since they don't know any boys, that means one of them will have to dress up in drag as Hibari's fake boyfriend.

Tsugumi gets chosen to be drag-king-for-a-day, presumably because she's the tallest. Suzume binds her chest, sticks a wig on her, and even outfits her with a handy gadget that will lower her voice.

So later, Hibari has been waylayed by Uzura again, when Tsugumi shows up, doing her best bishie pose.

And she's like "Hi, I'm Mitsugi, Hibari's boyfriend. Did I mention that I'm Hibari's boyfriend? Because it's true, we are totally totally dating."

"Look at how dating we are!"

But Uzura is unconvinced and decides to accompany them on their "date." Probably because Tsugumi's trying-way-too-hard shirt made her suspicious.

Actual dialogue:
Hibari: Y'know, this feels pretty strange. I mean, it's not like we haven't held hands before, but this time it's different.
Tsugumi: *blushes* Don't say that, you're making me self-conscious, my palms are all sweaty!

Tsugumi: Oh no, what's going on? I suddenly feel so confused!

Here is a random cute picture of Tsugumi whispering in Hibari's ear.

But even after the date, Uzura isn't totally sold, so Suzume (who is watching the proceedings from inside her spaceship-thingy) decides to step it up a notch.

She uses a device to make Tsugumi and Hibari's clothes stick together, making it look like they're embracing.

More Actual Dialogue:
Hibari: What are you doing, Tsugumi? Why are you so close to me, huh?
Tsugumi: Don't be stupid! It's not me, it's you!

Hibari: I can't control myself!
Tsugumi: Me neither!

Uzura: It can't be! The two of them really are boyfriend and girlfriend!

And at this point Uzura starts wibbling in midair in total Puni Puni Poemi style and gushing about what a cute couple Hibari and Tsugumi are and good lord this role was really made for Cynthia Martinez to play.

However Suzume declares this to be a boring ending to the crossdresscapade, so she initiates "Phase 3: The Grand Finale Fanservice Climax!"

And Hibari and Tsugumi are like "Oh hey, we're unstuck now, that's nice."

"Oh crap."

Yep, Suzume's about to force the two of them to kiss.

Actual Dialogue:
Tsugumi: Dammit Hibari, don't close your eyes like that!
Hibari: Sorry, I got swept up in the moment.

So they're right about to kiss, and both are angsting about how this will be their first kiss and they weren't planning on giving it to a fellow girl...

But luckily Uzura jumps in between them just in time.

And accidentally puts her hand on Tsugumi's chest.

Actual Dialogue:
Uzura: YOU HAVE BOOBIEEEEEES! AND THEY'RE REALLY BIIIIIIG!

Oh Cynthia Martinez, ILU.

So that evening, Uzura visits Hibari outside her bathroom window and shows her the cosplay she made of Hibari's Diva (aka guardian angel), because she still hasn't taken the hint that Hibari's not interested.

More Actual Dialogue:
Hibari: But you can't have serious feelings for me, I'm really nothing special, really I'm not.
Uzura: I know, that's why I like you so much! I'm absolutely crazy about your boyish figure, your flat chest, the awkward way you walk, and how sometimes you look cross-eyed!
Hibari: Hey I have neighbors, you know! Stop yelling at the top of your lungs!

Then the tree that Uzura's standing on whiplashes backwards and sends her catapulting across town and into the bathroom of Kamome, another of Hibari's posse.

And Uzura's like

"omg your chest is even flatter and your figure is even more boyish than Hibari's!"

Lesbian sparkle dance of joy!

Sorry Kamome, now it's your turn to go get a crossdressing fake boyfriend.

THE END

Fun fact: This is not the only time that Cynthia Martinez and Luci Christian have been partners in LesYay — in Puni Puni Poemi, they played Poemi and Futaba, although their roles were reversed, with Christian playing the obsessed lesbian and Martinez playing her object of affection.
