It occurs to me that I keep making references to all these vintage Magical Girls, but y'all probably have no clue who they are or what their deals are. So here's a little rundown of MGs from 1966-1990, complete with pictures:

Sally: Created the Cute Witch genre. Started out in black-and-white. Has granny hair. Got remade in the late 80s.

Himitsu no Akko-chan: Created the Object User genre. Has a magic hand-mirror that gives her disguise powers. Has a really catchy and adorable theme song. Got remade in the late 80s and again in the 90s.

Mako-chan: The Little Mermaid, except she gets her legs in the first episode and spends the rest of the show on land having adventures, making friends with humans, and chasing her non-prince boyfriend. And the Ursula character isn't evil, and actually watches over Mako via crystal ball to make sure she doesn't get into major trouble. Has a magic pendant, an overprotective dad, and a living mother.

Sarutobi Ecchan: An extremely short ninja girl of mysterious origin. Character design makes her look like a frog. Powers include hypnotism, illusions, super-strength, and other handy tricks.

Marvelous Melmo: Her mother died in a car crash but returned as a ghost to give Melmo a jar of red and blue candies that can age and de-age her, so that she can pretend to be an adult and care for her little brothers. Candies inevitably end up in the mouths of the wrong people, hilarity ensues.

Chappy: Emulator of Sally, except her family joins her in the human world. First to use a wand.

Miracle Shojo Limit-chan: Cyborg. Empowered by her scientist father after a plane crash almost killed her. Has a lot more angst than most of her peers. Powers include speed, strength, and disguises. Gadgets include a flying book-bag and a walkie-talkie hat. Received poor ratings and has been largely forgotten even in her home country, probably because she premiered opposite the first Cutey Honey and was totally overshadowed.

Majokko Meg-chan: Cute Witch genre grows boobs, discovers boys, forgets to wear magic skirt. Show has buckets of fanservice as a result. First to have a rivalry with a Dark Magical Girl, complete with contrasting color schemes and occasionally teaming up to beat a common enemy BUT IT'S NOT BECAUSE I LIKE YOU OR ANYTHING, HONEST. First to have a Magical Girl Queenliness Test.

Majokko Tickle: Mischievous sprite who is freed from a book. More of a trickster than her peers. Had really crappy art/animation at the beginning.

Hana no ko Lunlun: Muggle sent on a quest across picturesque Europe to find a special flower. Uses a flower-powered pin to change her outfit. First to be aided by a Mentor Mascot — a talking cat and dog whose true forms are humanoid. First to have a Mysterious Protector boyfriend. Probably the first MG show to get an English dub.

Lalabel: First to wear all pink. Falls into the human world by accident while chasing a thief. Has a kitten sidekick and a blingy wand.

Minky Momo: First to have pink hair. Sent to the human world by her parents in order to save her world by making people happy. Has an older alter ego. Infamously got run over by a truck at the end of the original series.

Creamy Mami: Originated and codified the Magic Idol Singer genre. Inexplicably has technicolor hair in both her child and aged-up forms. Got her powers from an alien. Pierrot #1.

Persia: Wild child from Africa who is chosen to save a magical world by making people happy. Also inexplicably has technicolor hair in both her child and aged-up forms. Has a pet lion named Simba. Has two older-boy love interests, who also happen to be twins. Twin threesome fantasy for 10-year-old girls FTW. Pierrot #2.

Magical Emi: Uses real magic to become a famous stage magician. Basically a Magic Idol Singer with the license plates changed. Pierrot #3.

Dream Hunter Rem: Detective of the supernatural. Enters other people's dreams and fights the demons who cause nightmares. Sometimes does so while wearing not much of anything. Apparently has a girlfriend? Started out as a one-shot hentai, but was rereleased and continued sans porn when the producers realized that people actually liked the plot.

Genmu Senki Leda: OVA about a girl named Yohko who falls into another world, becomes a prophecied magic warrior, and fights an evil conqueror. Gets eaten by a flower during her transformation sequence.

Pastel Yumi: Has a magic wand that makes drawings come to life. Has parents with marital problems. Only Pierrot girl to not have an older alter ego. Pierrot #4.

Esper Mami: Psychic. Uses her powers to help people and solve mysteries. Poses nude for her artist dad to paint, apparently in a non-creepy way.

Sweet Mint: Sea green pigtails. Flying penguin sidekick. Otherwise a pretty derivative Cute Witch show.

Devil Hunter Yohko: Badass demon-slayer with a sword. Horny teenage girl with donut-hair. Show makes full use of its OVA status and features plenty of tits and violence. Kind of a spiritual successor to Cutey Honey.
